Avery lifted a spoon to Hunter’s lips, ignoring his grumbles.

“I can feed myself, love,” he insisted, holding out his hand. “My arms aren’t broken…anymore,” he added with a wince.

She pressed her lips together and shook her head. Guilt swamped her, churning in her stomach until she thought she might lose what little food she’d eaten. “Just let me take care of you. It’s the least I can do since I’m the one who caused all the damage.”

“It wasn’t your fault,” he growled.

The protective rumble sizzled across her frayed emotions, soothing her and making her want to sob all over again. She didn’t know how he did that—controlled her emotions with a glance, a touch, the sound of his voice. The longer they were together, the less she felt like a single entity.

“He’s right,” Mira said from by the window. “It’s mine. I should have realized that my spell wasn’t going to be enough. I was a fool to think I could suppress your magic.”

“I felt it coming,” Avery whispered, dropping her gaze to her lap. “I should have been able to see the signs. I should have told you to get away from me.”

“You’ve never had a waking vision before.” Mira shrugged. “How were you supposed to have known what to look for?”

“It’s not an excuse,” Avery snapped, setting Hunter’s soup down. “I’ve had hallucinations before, and I knew that feeling of wrongness. I should have assumed that my magic would get stronger.”

“What did you see?” Hunter asked warily.

Avery swallowed hard as bile rose in her throat. Images of Hunter’s death flashed in her mind, stinging her eyes with tears. Shame filled her at the thought of the destruction she’d caused after. She’d been helpless to control the blinding rage that had held her in its grip.

Clearing her throat, she did her best to answer without admitting to the darkness she’d felt. “More death. Helena was luring me out. Using the people I care about against me.”

“Who?” Hunter asked, staring at her so intensely that she could have sworn he saw straight through to her soul.

“You’ve got the cop stare down pat.” She rose to her feet and paced across the room. It was a cowardly move, dodging his questions, but she didn’t want to relive the agony again.

“Don’t avoid the question, Avery. Whose death did you see?” he demanded, sitting up straighter in bed.

“Yours,” she said softly, lifting her gaze to meet his. “Not that it makes much of a difference. Helena doesn’t need to kill you—I’m perfectly capable of doing it myself.”

He opened his mouth, no doubt to argue with her, but stopped as a high-pitched whistle sounded from the adjoining room.

Danny darted through the door, his hands raised up in surrender. “I didn’t do anything! I was just looking at the runes,” he pleaded, glancing toward Mira.

Mira shook her head, her face pale. “It wasn’t you, Daniel. We’re out of time.”

“One of your spells?” Hunter grunted, tossing back the covers and climbing to his feet with a groan.
